BCS mess and CFB picks

So as much as I didn’t think it would happen, this season is looking more and more like last season in college football. A season with top ten, top five and even top two teams upset every week. It’s chaos. In a way it’s good for the sport because it’s showing parity. But more so, it’s bad for the game. It looks more and more like no one is going undefeated (unless Penn State gets by Michigan this week then they will). That is going to leave about five one loss teams. Who’s to say what two get to play for the national championship. Is it the team that lost early in the year and now has won eight straight? Or the team that lost to another top five, one-loss team late in the year? What if Team A, Team B and Team C all have one loss, but Team A beat Team B and Team B beat Team C, Team C beat Team A. Then who? Or if Team A beat Team B and Team C but lost to Team D who has four loses? Then what? We are headed for weeks of argument that don’t have an answer.

Right now there are nine undefeated teams in the top 25: Texas, Alabama, Penn State, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, BYU, Utah, Boise State and Ball State. Ball State has no chance at the national title game, neither does Boise State. Utah plays BYU so at the most one team is undefeated and still probably not playing for the national title even though if BYU is still perfect, they should. OSU, Texas Tech and Texas all play each other still. And Alabama plays in the SEC which no one goes undefeated in. That leaves Penn State with the best chance to go undefeated. They still got Ohio State and Michigan State (and Michigan). I just don’t see any of the teams going undefeated but if any do, it will be PSU. Then that leaves just one spot left in the national title game. Does it go to BYU for  going undefeated? Does it go to USC for losing early then dominating? Does it go to Alabama who was No. 1 all year then lost in the SEC championship game? Does it go to Oklahoma for losing to Texas then winning the Big XII championship game? So many questions that set-up for a crazy end to the college football season.

TONIGHT’S GAME

BYU at TCU – BYU’s 16 game win streak goes against their best opponent yet this year. TCU has the nation’s best defense but don’t worry, that won’t slow down Max Hall. ESPN has the choice between this game or Florida State-North Carolina State. Good choice in not picking this game. Thanks ESPN.

SATURDAY’S GAMES

Texas Tech at Texas A&M – Remember when this game would be a laugher in favor of A&M? Seems like ever since that bon fire incident, the A&M football program has gone the way of some of the students, dead. (Sorry, too soon?)

Memphis at East Carolina – The Pirates win three in a row, then lose three in a row. The three-for-three turnaround starts with this game since Memphis is in morning of their mascot, TOM II, who died of cancer.

Vanderbilt at Georgia – Some bad blood between these two teams since Georgia danced on Vandy’s logo last year. I mean I understand why Georgia did it. Who would have ever thought Vandy would be a good football team. I hope Vandy scores and all their players run and dance on Georgia’s logo. Vandy wins.

Kansas at Oklahoma – Kansas isn’t getting any respect in the polls after losing to South Florida and barely beating Iowa State. A win puts them back in the national title picture, but it won’t happen. The Sooners  win. However, Kansas still has a shot at the Big XII title if they beat Missouri later in the year.

Miami (FL) at Duke – Get Dickie V at the game this game. The Dukies are going to win!!!

Missouri at Texas – Texas has this game, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Kansas left. You really think they can go undefeated? I’ll take Missouri here as Texas has a let down after their big win since, well… Mack Brown.

Ohio State at Michigan State – I have no idea what to expect in this game. I didn’t think Michigan State would be this good and I thought OSU would have lost to Wisconsin, so what do I know. But as a Buckeye fan, you have to be concerned with that offense. Yes, Chris Wells is good and yes, Pryor made the play he needed to make against Wisconsin but it probably shouldn’t have come down to that. And when your starting tightend is saying Beckman should start, all can not be well in Columbus. Javon Ringer is a beast. OSU will have a tough time stopping him. I just don’t see OSU doing enough to stop him. Ringer has over 1,100 yards now. He could have 1,800 after his next two games (they play Michigan next week). This isn’t being a OSU hater either. Just if you had to pick an offense led by Ringer or Pryor, who would you pick?

Michigan at Penn State – Michigan has won nine in a row against JoePa’s great great grand kids. What are the chances that streak reaches ten? Better or worse than me getting one write in vote for President? This could be uglier than any Busket Boys game this year. But at least there was a mercy rule in our softball league. Michigan has to play the full 60 minutes on ESPN. Do you think ESPN regrets giving Michigan so many televised games?
