Another fantastic weekend of sports action is finally here. I know this is where I normally predict/rip/point out meaningless stuff on college football games, but when the two “marquee” games deal with Kentucky and Missouri, it’s an off week for CFB. Good thing there’s baseball.
Of course the big thing going on this weekend is the ALCS. And, of course, I predict the Indians to win. Tonight’s Game 1 should be a classic. It’s like last Friday’s Game 2 against the Yankees. I couldn’t watch the Tribe since I was at a high school game and the same holds true tonight. However, Cleveland won with a masterful performance from Fausto and a little luck. I expect the same type of game tonight. Listening to Tom Hamliton is much better than whatever Joe Buck and Tim McCarvery has to say. (If they even talk about the Yankees other than saying the phrase “lost to these Cleveland Indians” with it, at any time, they should be fired.) It will be a pitcher’s duel with C.C. coming out on top in the end. Indians win 3-1.
OK a few college games to look at followed by NFL news and a happy birthday.
** LSU at Kentucky ** Hey, UK fans. Remember that game on Nov. 9, 2002. Unranked and un-everything Kentucky lead 14th-ranked LSU 33-30 with 2 seconds left? Remember how you thought you had the upset and gave your coach the ole Gatorade bath before the final play? Remember how your fans stormed the field after the quarterback throw the ball on that final from his own 18-yard line? Remember how that final played turned out? Well, this year, the good news is it won’t come down to a final miracle play when LSU comes to UK for the first time since the “Bluegrass Miracle.”
** Missouri at Oklahoma ** I can’t believe this is the best game of the week. Number 11 at No. 6. Missouri wins. They have the best offense in the Big XII. I can’t imagine Mizzu in the Top 10 but since it already includes Boston College, Mizzu, South Florida, California and South Carolina, why not.
** Bowling Green at Miami ** Ben Rothlessburger (not worth spelling right) is having his number retired at halftime. Boy, that should be a special swell time. Any guys in Oxford tonight, don’t plan on hooking up, all the girls there think they are the one who is getting Big Ben. I just hope Ben gets hammered and someone convinces him to show off his tricks on his motorcycle.
** Eastern Michigan at Ohio ** I guess the homecoming game should be the reason why I’m heading down to the alma mater this weekend, but it’s not. It’s for Courtside, The C.I., The Pub and the other 15 bars on Court Street. This weekend I get to play college and I’m taking full advantage of the buck fifty drinks while I can.
Vinny Testaverde is going to start for the Carolina Panthers Sunday. You think this is a horrible idea since he is 43, just signed with the team Wednesday and hasn’t thrown a meaningful passing in like 5 years. But there other option is David Carr. Vinny wins because, after all, he did win the Heisman Trophy in 1941. How bad must Carr feel? Ryan Leaf feels sorry for you.
** Miami Dolphins at Cleveland Browns ** Browns should win this game and head into the bye week with a 3-3 record. I hate when I say the “Browns should win” because it seems they always lose the games they are favored in (I think they are 0-2 in those game). No Jamal Lewis means it could be a huge day for Derek Anderson and the passing game. Browns win 34-28.
Enjoy the weekend, but before I go, I missed a very important birthday yesterday. Happy 18th Birthday to Michelle Wie. Remember when you were relevant in the golf world? What happened to you? You would be banned from the LPGA Tour if you didn’t withdraw on the 15th hole in round two of whatever Major that was in the summer. And how to you celebrate your birthday? By getting invited to an event that is suppose to be for only the top 20 lady golfers in the world and posting an impressive seven-over, 79, just 12 shots out of the lead. Well done. What’s the over under on her until she poses for Playboy? Two-and-a-half years?
Go Tribe! Go Browns! Monday I’ll recap the impressive pitching by C.C and Fausto and the feel good Browns win.
