Now that I got the Happy Birthday ESPN out of the way, it’s time to turn our attention to the weekend. And what a glorious weekend it should be. The first real sports weekend since March. A full slate of college and NFL games and some pennant race deciding baseball games (none of which I’ll watch since it’s football season and the Indians basically have the division wrapped and as are all the other AL playoff spots).
The weekend actually got started last night with a great game between the Colts and Saints. I loved the game for two reasons; Drew Brees and his four fantasy points he put up. (I know my brother loved it for the Manning-Harrison combo, no one is laughing that you didn’t take a running back in the first two rounds now. Well we might be because that was stupid but for now you are in front.) Now if I don’t win my fantasy match-up when my opponent got only four points from his quarterback, I’m pulling a Florida Marlins and selling my team to build for next year.
Tomorrow all kinds of good football on the tube. Some of the highlighted games…
Miami (FL) at Oklahoma – imagine how big this game would if it was 2002.
Miami (OH) at Minnesota – Minnesota will start the year 0-2. Nothing out of the ordinary until you realize they lost to two MAC teams. (And it pains me to say this because it giving Graig’s team credit)
Duke at Virginia – if only it was basketball season.
Samford at Georgia Tech – when GT loses in a stunner, it will show just how bad Notre Dame really is.
Notre Dame at Penn State – When PSU wins, it will show just how bad Notre Dame really is.
Virginia Tech at LSU – an actually game that will be very entertaining to watch. Is LSU as good as they were against a horrible MSU team? Is VT as bad as they looked last week or was the emotion of the game weighing them down? This should be a great game. Too bad it’s on at 9:15 and most people will be out drunk by then. Not me though, I’ll watch most of it while I stay in and rest for the Browns game the following morning.
Akron at Ohio State – Game 2 in OSU quest to prove they are the best team in Ohio. First was Youngstown State, next is Kent State. What? Cleveland State and Ohio Wesleyan wasn’t avaible.
Oregon at Michigan – Michigan, for the love of God, needs a big win. They need to rebound and show they are better than what they did last week. At first I thought they would. I thought they’d come out and play tough, with a chip on their shoulder, play smarter, more physical, mistake free football. Then I found out the Oregon quarterback is a runner. He ran for 145 last week. Michigan can’t stop a running quarterback. You’d think in the last 10 years, someone at Michigan would have said, “Hey, you know how we can’t stop a quarterback who can scramble and run the option? I think we should find a way to do that.” How could any one at such a storied and proud program let this happen? They couldn’t stop Troy Smith for three years, Vince Young and last week some kid named after suits. I want to believe Michigan is better than last week and they’ll play like it against the Ducks, but I just don’t have that feeling now. Plus, to throw off Michigan even more, Oregon will be wearing some hideous green, white, yellow and black uniforms with white dots all over them.
Enough college. Let’s get to the Pros.
Well let’s just root for Jon Kinta, Roy Williams, Donald Driver, Deion Branch, Brian Westbrook, Willis McGahee, Chris Cooley, David Akers and the Miami defense.
I’ll only be able to watch one game Sunday. That’s because I’ll be at the Browns game tailgating with the Girlfriend and her family. Should be a good time. The first game of the year is always the best game to be tailgating at. Spirits are high, blood alcohol level is higher, everyone’s in a good mood, the weather is the best it’s going to be all year and, above all, there’s still hope because the Browns haven’t lost yet. Of course that all goes bye-bye at about 4:15. Either way, this will be a great time and hoping from some good stories for Monday’s post. (That’s if I’m not too hung over.)
Good luck to all your teams (except you Graig, I hope Miami and Washington lose and A-Rod’s hurt ankle turns out to be a new STD from toe a dirty stripper). Good luck to all your fantasy teams (expect those playing me). Everyone enjoy the best weekend of the year.
Hey now, let’s play nice. I like your optimism, but Minny’s weakness is defending the pass and we don’t have a good passing game. It will be close though. When it comes down to it, I’m going to be shitfaced anyway.
I will have the last laugh at the end when i destroy the league with my rounds 5 and 7 picks of travis henry and clinton portis end up staying healthy. And don’t forget Donovan McNabb and whoever was the black quaterback on ND that tore UM up some time ago in Carrs reign.
If Henry and Portis went in rounds 5 and 7, I want in this league!!!
