I’ve been dreading this moment. I knew could put it off only so long and today is the day I have to address why the college football season is worried for me.
As most know, I’m a Michigan fan. Saturday was one of the worse days of my life. I’m still hoping to wake up one of these days and it will be Saturday morning and the promise of a new football season and a national championship still loom for the Wolverines. Instead, the football season is all but over.
A I-AA (I’m, just like everyone else is still using the old classification and not the championship or bowl teams) cannot lose to a I-AA team and expect to play of a national title. I believe a good two-loss team, like USC or LSU, if they lose two would be voted higher than Michigan, even if they ran the table.
And that’s about the only thing now that can save the season, running the table and finishing 11-1. Even then though, it would be a diminished season. No matter what happens, haters of Michigan, or anyone for that matter, will always have the “But you loss to Appalachian State.” And that makes me sick. How long can that comeback be used? I’m thinking four years. And what if Michigan beats OSU and some of the other teams on their schedule (at this point it doesn’t seem likely) can that line be uttered by those fans? I say not.
I just can’t fathom this. Saturday was a horrible day, a gross, uneasy feeling, hearing it from my friends was bad, then I had to come to work today and live it all over again. Damn you Michigan! How can you do this to me? Saturdays in the fall is one of my favorite days/events of all time. I love watching Michigan play in big games and now no game will seem big. I’ll still watch them and follow them with a passion, but it just won’t be the same knowing there will be no national championship again.
I have so many thoughts and complaints about this game: Does Lloyd Carr leave now or do we want until the end of the season for him to move to his administrative role? Can the defense tackle anyone? Why didn’t they throw deep to Manningham before 16 seconds left? Why didn’t they keep pounding the ball with Hart and Minor? How can they not be up to play the first game of the season? They could have been playing Powder Puff football team from an all girls high school and they should have been fired up about the season starting.
I’m just to annoyed to go into it any more. Now, all year, I as a Michigan fan have no comeback for what any OSU, Notre Dame, Penn State or anyone else says. There’s nothing worse than “you loss to a division I-AA team.”
On the upside though, I’m a huge App State fan now and I just ordered three t-shirts. While Michigan won’t be winning a national title, my new favorite team will be trying to win third straight. Go Mountaineers.
