The trades happened

No sooner do I finish writing that last post as I get word from one of my sources that both trades should be officially announced soon. After I posed my “this won’t happen” I checked Fatty Windmill’s blog and he said both are a go.

Here’s what he says:

“After working on it practically through the night, the Cavs appear to be close to finalizing a major trade. A solid source said the Cavs have agreed to bring Ben Wallace and Joe Smith in from Chicago for Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden.

“The second complimentary  trade is apparently with the Seattle SuperSonics. The Cavs likely going to get Wally Szczerbiak to be their new shooting guard in addition to Delonte West, a point guard they have wanted for quite some time. Donyell Marshall, Ira Newble and perhaps Shannon Brown are expected to be in this deal.”

I think both these are good. They might not really be but the Cavs needed to shake things but and Ferry needed to do something to prove he was working at improving the roster. Wallace and Gooden are basically a wash with Wallace the much better rebounder and defender but Gooden better on the offensive end. Joe Smith will be a decent role player and he takes Larry Hughes out of the Cleveland and that’s something everyone has longed for way to long, so no one that ripped Larry should have anything bad to say about this one.

The other trade is even better. Bringing West in with Wally is great. Finally a true point guard. Losing Ira, D-Marsh an Shannon don’t hurt Cleveland at all and they are bringing in two guys who will have a much bigger impact than the guys leaving. I like it right now because Ferry actually did something. To know how I really feel I’ll have to let it all marinate and get back to you tomorrow.

Trade updates

This trade deadline stuff is getting very frustrating. I’m trying to keep in contact with my sources* and figure out what the Cavs are doing, if anything. The deadline was 45 minutes ago and I’m trying to make the necessary calls* to what trades have taken place. I don’t know what to think about this Ben Wallace possibility. I don’t know what he could bring to the team but it wasn’t that long ago he was a good player but the thing is his contract is so huge. Duhan is fine with me. He could find a nitch playing with LeBron (most people not named Larry Hughes do). I like the Wally trade. I’d love to see that happen. But that seems like a pretty simple trade and if we haven’t heard about it now, it probably didn’t happen.

I’m sticking to my original idea that Ferry didn’t really do anything here and there will be no changes to the Cavs roster. In case anything changes, you keep checking J Beanie Sports because I, and my staff, will be all over this.

*Note: By sources and calls of course I mean replace sources with credible websites and calls with hits to those websites.

Will Ferry do anything?

Sorry for the late entry today. I got a call this morning from my doctor that I went to see yesterday and I had to go back in for more blood work tests. The news isn’t good on the J Beanie front. I don’t want to get into it too much but seems I could be spending a lot more time in a doctor’s office in the next few months. My blood came back with a much bigger ratio of vampire to human components than normal. They are afraid I could go back to my blood sucking, zombie-like ways at any moment. With a little love, and some tenderness, I’ll walk above the waters, rise above the mess. With a little peace, and some harmony, I’ll take the world together, I’ll take em by the hand. Cause I want beat this zombie-ism for you. (Sorry about the random Hootie break out it just seemed to fit and then I kept it going. [That was Hootie’s Hold My Hand for all you non-hip people out there] I got to tell you, Hootie is still one of my favorite bands. You can’t turn the radio when you hear Hold My Hand, Let Her Cry, Only Wanna Be with You or Time. Classics. Oh, and I didn’t even have to research the words to Hold My Hand.)

Seriously though, I did go see the doctor this morning to get bloodwork and the reason my be even more heartbreaking than a serious illness to Frank and Rosie. I’m finally trying to get to the bottom of why my lips swell up. Going back for a second test hopefully will let the doctor know why. Once I find out what it is, I will never tell a soul because I know you jerks will try and drug me with whatever it is. Frank, Rosie and the rest of the lovers of my big lips, the end may be near.

OK, now on to something that actually matters. 3:00 pm today. That’s less than four hours away now. That’s the trade deadline for the NBA. There’s been all kinds of rumors the last few days about what the Cavs are trying to do. What do you think Danny Ferry is doing right now? Do you think he is on the phone with other GMs and agents trying to push a deal through like he should be doing? Or do you think he is in a darkly light room, playing with his toy train set with the only light coming from a TV showing old highlights of Ferry in his Duke uniform? I say it’s more towards the latter since he is probably so nervous right now.

I want to have confidence in Ferry and the Cavs that they’ll make a trade, but I just don’t see it happening. It’s going to be the same thing as last year. Nothing will happen by 3:00 and Ferry will make some statement saying how he tried to find a deal but nothing worked out and how that’s not a bad thing considering this team went to the NBA Finals last year and there is good chemistry, yada yada yada…

He’s right. The team will be OK if a deal isn’t done but that’s only because we have LeBron James (who keeps saying he hopes there is a trade). That Mike Miller and Kyle Lowry trade we talked about yesterday needs to happen even more now than it did yesterday. Gibson got hurt yesterday and who knows how long he’ll be out. With the Cavs injury situation this season it will probably be a month.

Since I brought it up, great game last night by the Cavs. LeBron’s second straight triple double was much more impressive than his first, considering his teammates were there to help him out. Good to see (I say that loosely since I didn’t watch too much of the game) that Larry and Z can step up in close games when we need them to. Mike Brown must have read my post from two days ago about how it’s silly to think of anyone else as the MVP other than LeBron.

As great as LBJ is, and as good as Larry and Z played last night, and have played for a few weeks, the Cavs need some help still. The trade with Memphis makes the most sense. The other one out there is getting Delonte West from Seattle. That would be great too. I really, really hope one, or both, or any other, of these trades happen. I just don’t have that much confidence in Ferry to actually pull the trigger on a big time trade. Instead, I think we’ll see something like Dwayne Jones and cash for some mediocre roll player he hopes turns into this years Flip Murray. I haven’t been good at predicting too many things recently, so I hope I’m wrong here too. Unlike your playing career Ferry, make something happen. This isn’t one of those things where you can just spot up from the outside and hope the ball comes to you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the final game of the year for Team River City, we came out victorious despite missing another key player. The short handed TRC guys battled hard and came away with a 67-66 victory. It was a thrilling game and a great way to end the season. TRC was trailing most of the game but we made a run in the second half. I made three’s on back-to-back possessions to give us a one point lead. The other guys came down and scored to go back up one with about 1:30 to play. Next possession, I drove to the hoop and got fouled. One of the other teams players was T’d up on the play for yelling at the ref. I got four foul shots. Although I only made two of them, it was enough to hang on for the win. We wasted some time off the clock after the free throws but missed two wide open shots. The other team got the ball back with 17 seconds. The had a couple decent looks under the hoop but our big guys were banging and contending every shot. The final loose ball was pick up by one of their little guys, he tried going right back up with it but I stepped in and stripped the ball and one of our bigs picked it up to seal the win. A great win to end the season. We were without three guys who started the year on our team but it didn’t matter. Team River City is never out of it. I’m just a little sad this was the last game of the year. But at least softball isn’t too far in the future. GO TEAM RIVER CITY! WHAT A GOOD YEAR!
