The college football season has been, umm what’s the word to use, weird? Strange? Bizarre? Unpredictable? Worthless? a tease? Crazy? Upsetting? I don’t know. Pick one. There was been so many twist and turns. There as been an upset every week and the No 1. or No. 2 team has lost to unranked teams 673 times. There is no clear cut No. 1 or No. 2 team. Therefore, there is only one thing to do that would make it a perfect ending to this incredible awkward season. And no, having OSU play LSU in the National Championship game is not it. The only thing that should be done is to cancel the bowl season and call this whole college football season a wash. It’s time for the big D-O, or do over. Push the reset button and pretend this thing never happened.
Why is this the only thing to do? The National Championship game contestants came by default. No one could pick who the best two team were so they picked the team that hadn’t played in three weeks, and there for didn’t lose for three weeks and a team that was ranked eighth in the pervious BCS polls. Does that make any sense? If there are no two best teams, the system is worthless. This is even worse than in (I think it was) 2003 when undefeated Auburn was left out of the title game or in 2004 when USC won part of the national title without playing in the BCS title game. At least in those situations it was a debate about only two teams for the final spot. This year there are eight teams that have an argument.
There are so many things that bother me about the bowls this year. Even more than just Ohio State being in the National Championship game. First, I don’t think I want to call it the National Championship game anymore. What term better describes the game? The Game That Has To Give The National Title To Someone Because That’s What The Rules Say? The Default National Championship Game? The Game That Ends The Year? I’ll go with No. 2.
If there ever was a way to get lucky and to back-in to The Default National Championship Game, Ohio State did it. That annoys me more than the fat, stinky man who sits next to me at work and will fart in the room and pretend nothing happened and not even apologize for it. It’s not even the fact that OSU is in The Default National Championship Game, it’s how they did it. If the Big Ten season ended Saturday like every other BSC conference does, the Buckeyes would have never been in the game. They would have lost to Illinois the week before and would have dropped to eight or nine in the polls (like they did). A win over a very mediocre Michigan team would not have been enough to climb up to the top ranking. But since they haven’t played for three weeks, again meaning they couldn’t lose, all of a sudden they were good enough to move up the rankings and to The Default National Championship Game. Does that make any sense? How is a team that four weeks ago was ranked 8th and only beat a non-ranked team all of sudden play for the national title? By default, that’s how. I’m sorry but that’s unacceptable.
Ohio State is not the best team in the country. I think even OSU fans would agree with that. The question, once again, is who is the best team in the country. OSU’s best wins were over 15th ranked Wisconsin and non-ranked Michigan. I hate bringing up strength of schedule but it should be figured in. If OSU played in the SEC, Big XII or even the ACC, they would not have won the conference. It was just a horrible year for the Big Ten. When there is no clear cut best team, or best two teams in the country, then you should throw out the records and just look at talent. I think the voters did that in moving LSU up to No. 2 after being No. 7 after the Arkansas loss. But they didn’t do it to OSU. They were number won by default since they only have one loss.
Look at Virginia Tech. They have two losses but one was to LSU early in the year and the other was to Boston College, then No. 2 in the country and currently No. 14. Pretty strong.
Maybe I’m looking at it the wrong way since I’m a Michigan fan. I’m trying to be objective (sort of) and I just truly don’t see how OSU can play for a national title. The worse part about it is that Buckeye fans think they really deserve it. There no is going to four weeks of “We’re playing for the national championship” talk that is unwarranted. I don’t even know what to say about those fans. I’m getting annoyed thinking and writing about it. At this point, I’d rather be trapped in a small room my farting fat co-worker than an OSU fan.
A few other things that bother me about this year’s bowls. How does Missouri not go to a BCS game and Kansas does? Committed commenter Scott brought this point up yesterday and I totally agree. Read his comments from yesterday’s post.
The same with Illinois. They don’t deserve the Rose Bowl. They got it only because on conference can have more than two teams in BCS bowls and you have to be ranked in the top 14 to get an at-large bid. USC will beat them by 45.
Why not Hawaii? They ran the table. Yes it was an extremely soft schedule but no one would play them. Michigan and Michigan State both backed out of games with them. I know I just said Ohio State had a week schedule and that should factor into not playing in The Default National Championship Game but one thing that no matter who the team and what their schedule is in BCS conferences, if you run the table, you get to play for the national title. Hawaii did that and I think they have as good as a case as any other team. I don’t think anyone would be able to stop their passing game.
There’s so much but I think I’ve said enough for now. I’ll let you guys throw around some opinions about this. One more note, Michigan plays Florida in the Capital One Bowl. So not only do I get to see 584 commercials about the Mascot Bowl but I get to watch Michigan lose by 35 in Lloyd Carr’s final game. That will be a perfect way to end the season. The only more perfect way would be if the entire bowl schedule was canceled.
What a great post. I think I’m falling in love with you all over again. This has been the worst season ever in any sport involving any gender. Let’s give the title to the fans for having to watch all these shitty teams week in and week out.
Did I read somewhere that you said even Luckeye fans would agree that they are not the best team in the nation? You have to be kidding. According to them, Todd Boeckman is the second coming of, umm….what was a good QB from OSU?? Stanley Jackson? Steve Bellisari? YEs strength of schedule should matter but it doesn’t. Well it doesn’t matter for a big money school like Ohio State but as for Hawaii since they don’t play anyone they don’t deserve a chance. The Luckeye’s best opponent was Penn State who was ranked 23 for that week but unranked all season. Hawaii’s best opponent was Boise State who was ranked all season until they lost to Hawaii. I would argue Hawaii’s schedule was just as or more difficult than the LUckeyes.
Also, let me get this straight, Missouri gets to the Big 12 title game and loses so they fall into oblivion but Kansas and Georgia never even make it to a title game and get into a BCS bowl??? I bet Missouri wishes they lost to Kansas. It is better to never make your conference title game then to make the title game and lose. College football is a joke. Ah one more thing, I work at Jonny Malloys which is a sports bar and every week i had to watch the OSU game with OSU fans and i thought that was the worst thing ever but i found one more thing worse – watching a game with osu fans rooting for a team to lose so that the luckeyes can back into a title game that they don’t deserve to play in. Anyone want to bet me that LSU wins by 13?
Scott, I think you meant to channel your inner-Mike Tyson by saying that Missouri “falls into Bolivian”.
what a salty, sore loseing, michigan fan writer you are JBeanie…
Suprisingly, I don’t totally disagree with everything you said. You are probably right that nobody truly deserves to be in the title game. But I believe Ohio State has much of a right to be in the game as anybody. It is not their fault that the Big Ten sucked. Every team in the hunt had a bad loss. I don’t think OSU’s loss was any worse than OU losing to Colorado or USC losing to Stanford (we’ll find out how good Illinois is against USC). But while you may the BCS sucks, can you remember a regular season this exciting and crazy. It was fantastic. That is why college football has the best regular seaon. I just hope that the Bucks redeem themselves from last season’s debacle, and I am supremely confident that they will.
