You know how sometimes all it takes is one thing to bring back a memory or a feeling? Sometimes it’s a smell, sometimes it’s a taste, sometimes it’s picture.
Yesterday it was something I heard and saw. That’s all it took to have the feeling, the excitement, the passion, come back to me.
I was cooking dinner yesterday (pasta of course), when I heard a familiar and beautiful sound from the TV. Brent Musburger came on and said something like. All I really heard was Michigan and Ohio State. (By the way, I call Musburger’s voice beautiful because of what it reminds me of, not necessarily because it’s beautiful. Although he is one of the better in the game.)
I stopped what I was doing and watch the commercial. Musburger talked the game up. Talking about the rivalry and the game, how, like so many times, this one is for the Big Ten Championship a trip to the Rose Bowl.
There were highlights of both teams and I think (although it might not have been in the actual commercial) video of Michigan players with Roses in their teeth.
I started smiling and clapping that was it. I was back and I was pumped for the game just like that. I don’t care about the loses last week. I don’t care that people think the Big Ten is horrible this year. I don’t care about anything but kickoff at noon inside the Big House.
If Musburger’s commercial got me fired up, I can only imagine what his opening at noon will do. “You’re looking live at the Big House in Ann Arbor, Michigan.” I love that phrase.
So thank you Brent (for once I say that line and am not thanking myself) for getting me fired up for The Big Game. I wish it was 7:00 am and I was opening my first Miller Lite. Saturday can’t come soon enough.

Have to say congratulations to C.C. Sabathia on winning the Cy Young. At least he was able to beat Boston in something. It’s a great win for him and it’s be an interesting ride to see him come from a 21-year old flame thrower to one of the best pitchers in the league. But if I hear one more person say “good thing the postseason doesn’t count for the Cy Young” I’m going to punch someone. If you didn’t know that before yesterday, you my friend are an idiot. Get over it. Those are rules. C.C. had the best numbers in the regular season and yes, we all know he crapped down his leg, a la, Sergio Garcia on Sunday during the postseason. But congrats C.C.
The Cavs are 4-4 and that’s two games better than I’d thought they’d be at this time. At first I didn’t like making the west coast trip so early in the season but now I’m glad we got it over with. To be 4-4 at this point would be like being 6-2 if they were playing at home. Now if Sasha would get his back straight and Andy would sign and Larry would get his yearly miss-at-least-40-games injury, I think the Cavs will be fine.
And on a note that very few, if any, people will care about, Team River City starts their season tonight. Team River City is my park and rec basketball team. I like our chances this year. The defending champion didn’t return to the league and we lost to them in the championship last year. Things are looking good for Team River City. We have two new key acquisitions (including the leagues leading scorer last time he played in the league, my brother) and we have new sharp uniforms (T-shirts). Of course there is that probably with running up and down a court for 38 minutes that might hurt us. I’m expecting big things for us. Tonight’s opening game is against Chelsea’s at 7:45 at Roberts Middle School. Come check us out. It will be worth your money. And don’t worry, I’ll keep everyone updated on how we do this year.
