The weekend is here again and I feel like a owe you an extra special weekend outlook since I was too lazy last Friday to do anything. I would be happy to do that but there isn’t much going on in the World O’Sports this weekend. Just one game is being played. The game to end all games. The biggest, most important sporting event ever played. The game the world stops for. It’s Super Bowl Forty One and a Half. It’s the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots. There might be other game on this weekend but who cares. No one knows about them since this is the only game anyone on TV is talking about. It makes me feel like I have to talk about this, and this only.
I’m not sure who will win. I used to think no one would be the Patriots this year but Indy at home, as an underdog, it’s hard not to take them. I’m more of a Pats fan because I’m a Brady fan so I hope they win but I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t. But I’m sick of all the build up and the hype. Even more sick of all the praise each team is giving the other. “You’re the best.” “No, You’re the best.” “Thank you but, really, you’re the best.” And so forth. Why can’t someone come out and just say what they really feel. “I hate that team. We’ve had some good games against each other but nothing give me a great joy than beating their brains in. I hate them. They are overrated and I hope we crush them and injury some of their players.” They can’t really like each other. Just tell us what we all want to hear and what we all already know.
As good of a game as it should be, I will not be watching. In fact, no one in the Cleveland area will be unless they have the NFL Network (which I do). I won’t be watching it because I’ll be at another football game. Yes, surprisingly there are others being played. I’m going to the Browns-Seahawks game. I had to look at my tickets just to make sure it was the right date. Then I called the NFL and the Browns to make sure the game was still on and not canceled so everyone could enjoy the second coming of Jesus Christ, err, I mean the Colts-Pats game.
I’m kind of pumped for this game since it a 4 o’clock start time. I’ve never been to a Browns game for a late kickoff. This means we don’t have to get up there real early to tailgate (I’m sure we still will), more time to tailgate (always good) and the game will be played under the lights for most of the second half. That should be good.
I say the Browns continue to roll and beat up on the ‘Hawks. Like I said earlier, if Seattle is relying on Charlie Frye to give them insight into the Browns offense, the Browns should be in good shape since Frye never understood the offense while he was here. It should be interesting to see what people do with Frye jerseys or if those nerds who worn those “Charlie Fries” costumes do anything with them. Browns win big, 34-21.
Now on to a quick look at some college games starting with the big game of the week.
** Arizona State at Oregon ** A huge Pac-10 game with top 5 teams and for the first time since the creation of fire, USC is not involved. The Ducks will come out in a never before seen uniform combination (white helmets, green shirts and yellow pants) and scare the hell out of ASU. If that doesn’t work, the noise inside one of the toughest places to play, will. Oregon will then jump to No. 2 in the BCS and controversy follows, mainly from LSU and BC fans.
** Nebraska at Kansas ** If Kansas came into this game ranked No. 8 in the county and a 19 point favorite, wouldn’t you think it was basketball? Tom Osborne can’t even save the Corn.
** LSU at Alabama ** Nick Saban you slimy, weaselin’’, bastard. If you win this game, which I think you will, I hope you ate a good pregame meal, for it could well be your last.
** Florida State at Boston College ** BC will lose once. It will either be here or at Clemson. I’ll take FSU. So disregard those comments in the Oregon game. BC and LSU are out of the national title hunt after this weekend.
** Wisconsin at Ohio State ** Why are some people predicting OSU to lose? Wisconsin is struggling and PJ Hill probably won’t play. OSU won’t lose at home and will set the record for 20 consecutive Big Ten wins. They’ll be undefeated going into Ann Arbor in two weeks.
** Michigan at Michigan State ** Michigan hasn’t lost to MSU since the magical second that never ran off the clock in 2001 which allowed TJ Duckett to catch a TD pass on the final play of the game. That game was so bad (I still get pissed about it and hate TJ Duckett to this day) that it forced official timekeeping to be done by neutral on-field officials. The streak won’t end this year. Michigan’s defense is coming into its own, especially against the run. MSU can only run the ball and Michigan will stuff them. Mike Hart is averaging 188 yards against MSU and I expect him to be back to his old self and put up numbers like that again. Of course, MSU has a knack for beating Michigan teams when they shouldn’t, but in the 100th meeting between the in-state rivals, give the Paul Bunyah Trophy.
Enjoy the weekend. If you don’t watch the Super Bowl, I’m pretty sure you’ll rot in hell (that’s why I’m taping it). GO BLUE and GO BROWNS!!!
